Geology of Holmes Run Gorge, VA. One-day field trip on Sat., June 8, with a rain/snow date of June 15. Holmes Run Gorge is a picturesque, canyon-like area in Alexandria. Our instructional day will consist of a 3-hour class at the college, followed by a 5-hour geologic tour of the gorge. Additional info online Weekend Course Off-Campus Location Other Sessions Geology of Great Falls Park, VA. One day field trip on Saturday June 1st with additional on-line readings and assignments. Rain date: June 2nd. Trip to study the modern and ancient forces that have acted to create Great Falls National Park. Trip involves some easy to moderate hiking. Meet at Great Falls National Park in McLean, VA at 10:00 am on the day of the class. The trip will run until approximately 4-5pm. More information about meeting time/place and logistics will be available on the Canvas site for the course approximately one week prior to the date of the meeting. Building Stones of the National Mall, Washington, DC. One-day field trip Sat. June 1 (10 AM-5 PM); rain date Sun., June 2. Walking tour considers the history and architecture of the National Mall, examining the stones used to construct federal buildings and national monuments there. Triassic-Jurassic Rift Valley of Northern VA. One-day field trip Sat. 7/27/24 (9 AM-7PM); Rain date Sun. 7/28/24. Trip considers the geologic history of the famous Mesozoic rift basin, specifically across the Manassas, Leesburg, and Haymarket areas. Field stops visit quarry and roadside outcroppings of all rock families, dinosaur tracks, rift-basin stratigraphy and rift-zone tectonic structures.
